Residential Furniture Reupholstery by Old World Craftsmen

Olek Inc. reupholsters sofas, lounge chairs, dining chairs, benches, ottomans and collectible seating with the same attention to construction that the best furniture received when it was new. From cherished heirlooms and everyday seating to Mid-Century Modern designer pieces, Olek rebuilds comfort from the inside out—springs, padding, cushions, fabric, leather and finishing details—not simply the visible cover.

01

Custom Sofa, Chair & Seating Reupholstery

Olek reupholsters sofas, settees, lounge chairs, armchairs, dining chairs, side chairs, benches, ottomans and cushions. Each piece is assessed individually so fabric, leather, padding and structural work are tailored to the furniture rather than applied as a standard package.

Traditional Horsehair & Coil-Spring Upholstery
Coil springs, horsehair, cotton & traditional foundations

02

Traditional Horsehair & Coil-Spring Upholstery

For furniture built with traditional upholstery, Olek can evaluate coil springs, spring tying, webbing, horsehair, cotton and shaped padding. Serviceable original material can be retained where appropriate; failed layers can be rebuilt so the piece keeps the character and comfort of a properly constructed traditional seat.

Mid-Century Modern & Designer Reupholstery
MCM designer furniture, natural latex & original profiles

03

Mid-Century Modern & Designer Reupholstery

Mid-Century Modern furniture often depends on distinctive foam behavior, cushion geometry, stitching and material choices. Olek can use natural latex foam rubber or other project-appropriate systems when original construction and design intent call for them, and can coordinate deeper restoration through its specialty furniture restoration expertise . Eames-specific work can also be directed to Olek’s specialist Eames Lounge Chair service .

Leather Reupholstery & Hand-Sewn Leatherwork
Full-grain, top-grain & specialty leatherwork

04

Leather Reupholstery & Hand-Sewn Leatherwork

Leather can be selected for hand, finish, grain, aging characteristics and the way it must form around the piece. Options can include full-grain and top-grain leather, vegetable-tanned, embossed, tooled, distressed or decorative leather where suitable. Not every leather type is appropriate for every upholstered surface; hide selection is considered against thickness, hand, stretch, finish, seam construction and the geometry of the piece. Hand sewing and period-sensitive seam details are available when required by the original design.

Cushion Rebuilding: Down, Natural Latex & Foam
Partitioned down, natural latex, foam & custom cushion profiles

05

Cushion Rebuilding: Down, Natural Latex & Foam

Seat and back cushions can be rebuilt around the comfort, shape and historical character of the furniture. Depending on the piece, that may mean partitioned down, natural latex foam rubber, modern urethane foam, layered fills or a combination chosen to reproduce the intended profile and support.

Original Upholstery Conservation & Material Retention
Original upholstery, historic materials & conservation-aware treatment

06

Original Upholstery Conservation & Material Retention

Not every original cover should automatically be discarded. When fabric or leather carries design, historical or sentimental value, Olek can assess whether it should be conserved, stabilized, retained or carefully reinstalled over a restored upholstery foundation. Original upholstery is not automatically suitable for continued daily use; treatment depends on condition, significance, the intended use of the furniture and the owner’s priorities.

What Our Clients Say

★★★★★
We used Olek Inc. to shorten and polish our beautiful heavy wood dining table. Olek had to disassemble the table, cut it, re-attach the bookends, and make it look like it was never touched. The result was flawless — you would never know it was modified.

★★★★★
I have a Vladimir Kagan 175 E armchair that was literally falling apart — the wood was separating at the joins and the leather seat and padding were shot. Peter at Olek did an amazing job bringing it back to like-new condition. Highly recommended for designer furniture restoration.

This is the second time I've had Olek reupholster my sofas. Each time I've been astonished at the stunning work. The craftsmanship is impeccable and the attention to detail is second to none. I wouldn't trust anyone else with my furniture.

Residential Furniture Reupholstery FAQs

What types of furniture does Olek reupholster?

Olek reupholsters sofas, settees, lounge chairs, armchairs, dining and side chairs, benches, ottomans, cushions and other upholstered residential furniture. Work ranges from everyday high-quality seating to heirlooms, antiques and Mid-Century Modern designer pieces. Olek’s residential portfolio includes a Modernica Cloud Sofa, custom leather sofa reupholstery, custom-finish reupholstery and chair upholstery.

Can I provide my own fabric or leather?

Yes. Customer-supplied material can be used when it is suitable for the furniture and upholstery method. Olek can also help evaluate yardage, pattern repeat, direction, durability and whether the textile or leather will behave correctly on the piece before it is cut.

Do you replace the padding and springs, or only the fabric?

Olek evaluates the complete upholstery system. Depending on condition and goals, work can include webbing, coil springs, spring tying, horsehair, cotton, latex, foam, down cushions and other layers—not just the visible cover. Serviceable original construction can also be retained when appropriate.

How does Olek handle pattern matching, welting and hand details?

Large repeats, stripes, plaids and directional textiles demand disciplined placement. Pattern placement, seams, welting, tufting, channels, piping, hand sewing and cushion profiles are planned so visual details line up across the piece and the finished upholstery belongs to the furniture rather than simply covering it.

Can original leather or upholstery material ever be conserved and reused?

Sometimes. If original fabric or leather is significant to the design, history or sentimental value of the furniture, Olek can assess whether it should be conserved, stabilized, retained or carefully reinstalled over a restored upholstery foundation. Continued use depends on condition and the demands that will be placed on the piece.

Does Olek reupholster Mid-Century Modern and designer furniture?

Yes. Olek has longstanding experience with antique and Mid-Century Modern furniture. Designer pieces may require specific cushion profiles, natural latex or other original-type materials, hand sewing or construction details that should be preserved rather than replaced with a generic upholstery build. Highly specialized furniture restoration can also be coordinated through Olek’s specialty furniture services.

Can Olek match the original comfort and cushion profile of a sofa or chair?

Yes, when the surviving construction, references and available materials allow it. Olek can evaluate cushion geometry, spring behavior, padding density, edge build-up, down or latex construction and other details that influence how the furniture sits and looks. The goal can be to reproduce the original feel and silhouette rather than simply making the piece softer or firmer. A piece can look beautifully recovered and still feel wrong if its foundation has been flattened, simplified or rebuilt with inappropriate materials, so comfort and silhouette are treated as design requirements, not afterthoughts.

What cushion and padding options are available?

Options can include traditional horsehair and cotton, natural latex foam rubber, modern urethane foam, layered fills and partitioned down cushions. The correct system depends on the furniture’s original design, desired comfort, cushion profile, condition and owner preferences.

How long does residential reupholstery take?

Timing depends on the number and complexity of pieces, underlying repair needs, fabric or leather availability, traditional upholstery work, cushion fabrication and approvals. Olek establishes a project-specific schedule after reviewing the furniture and selected materials rather than promising a one-size-fits-all turnaround.

Why choose Olek for residential reupholstery?

Olek’s early history centered on antique and Mid-Century Modern furniture conservation, restoration and reupholstery. Today upholsterers work alongside cabinetmakers, finishers, carvers and other specialists, so a reupholstery project can also address a loose frame, damaged joinery, exposed wood, missing detail or finish work when the furniture needs more than a new cover.

Do you offer pickup and delivery?

Pickup and delivery can be coordinated for residential clients in the New York and New Jersey region. For furniture traveling farther, specialty carrier options can be discussed based on the piece, destination and project requirements.
